This initiative's mission is to intervene in young people's lives who are participting in the Free and Reduced Meals (FARM) program and have scored Basic on the reading portion of the Maryland School Assessment (MSA). Through early identification and early intervention, youth who may have otherwise continued to struggle with reading comprehension and proficiency will find the support and encouragement necessary to improve their reading skills and be successful throughout their school careers. This will be accomplished through the work of staff, volunteers, and community partners, who will incorporate community mobilization, recruitment, educational programming, character development, enrichment, and service learning projects in the program. Program staff and volunteers will work to increase support and cooperation among all domains of a student's life, including providing educational supports for family and community members.
Program services include violence prevention education, reading interventions, character and leadership building programs, homework assistance and tutoring, and recreational activities that include sports, arts and crafts and music. Hot meals are also provided daily. This program is available at the Garland Hayward Youth Center in Princess Anne, MD and the Village Youth Center in Crisfield, MD.
